The month thesis
October brought AI into devices and the workplace: Apple introduced new products for Siri, Google launched a work agent, Meta brought an assistant to Instagram creators, and Microsoft bet on PCs with Nvidia chips. But the promise of personal agents still coexists with incomplete products and a contest over who wins users—and Microsoft is already turning that contest into a direct confrontation with Apple. The investment bill also grew: Anthropic is preparing to go public, while Microsoft is seeking billions in debt to fund expansion.
Trust, however, was the period’s most visible cost. OpenAI faced reports of breaches of public systems, leaks of hospital data, and a retreat from a political promise; Meta faced backlash from publishers over content collection, and Amazon was unable to contain local resistance to its data centers.
