What happens if Waymo’s computer fails?

The August thesis

August turned going public into a new arena of power: Anthropic targets the largest IPO, OpenAI accelerates revenue and fundraising, while SpaceX/xAI/Cursor pays the price of an AI expansion that is already weighing on results. Alibaba/Qwen mobilizes money to advance in China, and Nvidia tries to sustain its position amid bets, acquisitions and forecasts that fail to excite investors. Capital ceased to be merely fuel: it became public proof of scale and trust.

But trust came due. Anthropic, Meta, OpenAI, DeepSeek and Microsoft appeared linked to intrusions, breaches or agents used in attacks; Amazon/AWS faced backlash and legal action for training AI with others’ content. Google/Alphabet reshuffled its leadership and abandoned products, while Apple cut teams and Microsoft backed away from Excel Copilot.
